Client-Centered, Team-Guided Spotlight: Jacob

For over a decade, Help in the Home has been a privately-owned agency that provides personalized care through support and community to help adults with complex mental health needs achieve stability, independence, and inclusion.

Our team focuses on building an alliance of trust and making sure our community members know that we will stand by them throughout their journey. Connection and joy are at the center of why we do what we do.

This year, we wanted to give our readers a more in-depth view into who our clients are, how they’ve partnered with the team at Help in the Home to find joy in the midst of their illness, and how we have facilitated a team of professionals and treatment providers to help them get there.

For our last Client-Centered and Team-Guided Spotlight of 2021, we’d like to share Jacob’s story as told from his father.

Jacob and more of his story…

Jacob was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder complicated by substance abuse. Before coming to HITH, Jacob’s life was a rollercoaster of being in and out of different hospitals and treatment programs. In just 3 years, he was in 18 different programs. Like any concerned parent, Jacob’s father was frustrated and scared that there wasn’t a way to provide a secure and calm setting where Jacob could feel safe. Jacob has lived in Help in the Home’s Supported Living Community since his mid 20s.

Strengths and Struggles

When Jacob first got to Help in the Home, it was the beginning of his adult life, and his family did not have to worry about who would care for their son during these beginning stages. When you have a child with schizophrenia, it is living with the unknown and that can be scary for any parent as they grapple with their child’s daily struggles. It is so necessary to have more communities like Help in the Home to provide that support for clients and their families.

Those that know Jacob know that he enjoys managing stock investments and everything electronic. Jacob is the go-to guy for technology questions, especially when you are in need of an upgrade. He will do the research and give you options for the best items to purchase.

Jacob’s two brothers and extended family are grateful and blessed for the Help in the Home team for creating an environment where he is cared for, feels right at home and allows for growth in life skills. For example, if Jacob chooses as a goal for himself to transition into his own apartment, he has that as an option.

As a parent, you like to know your child is safe and feels a sense of belonging, while also needing to know they are following medical instructions and taking their medication as prescribed. Everyone needs a place to call home. A home where they are accepted, understood and can truly be themselves. Help in the Home has provided the perfect combination for Jacob which has allowed him to develop the ability to interact, bond, form real friendships, while giving his family peace of mind.

Where Jacob is now…

Because of the support from Help in the Home, Jacob feels loved, supported, and respected as an adult. He joined our Supported Living Community in his mid 20’s and is now a grown man in his late 30’s. Jacob has grown with the program and he is not the same person today as he was day one.

What Jacob’s father shared about partnering with Help in the Home…

“If it wasn’t for Help in the Home, I would feel like I was out in the ocean in a slow leaking boat. It has been a godsend to partner with HITH in caring for my son. They address the ability of each client to live to their full potential. Their program is designed to foster the individual’s growth, while developing relationships with people in the community.

Ever since Jacob has lived in the HITH community, I can lay my head on the pillow at night and rest knowing he is being cared for physically and emotionally.”

We love you Jacob and are honored to walk alongside you and your family!
