Q: Terence, why did you choose a career in the mental health field?

Terence:

After spending more than 20 years in the corporate world, I realized I wanted my work to have a more direct and personal impact on people’s lives. Volunteering in underserved communities opened my eyes to the challenges people face every day such as violence, homelessness, grief, and mental health struggles. One moment that really stuck with me was when someone heard me speak at a community event and told me I should think about working in mental health. That conversation planted the seed, and the support from my family and friends confirmed it was the right move. I haven’t looked back since and it has been the most rewarding career shift I could have made.

Q: Tell us how your experience with Help in the Home has been so far and what you are doing in your new role as the Supported Living Community Program Manager?

Terence:

My time at Help in the Home has been nothing but positive. I have had the chance to work directly with clients, build strong relationships, and learn a lot from great co-workers. In my new role as SLC Program Manager, my day usually starts with checking in with staff, making sure the homes are running smoothly, and handling any client needs that come up. I take care of the day to day, which can include helping with meals, working with care teams, and stepping in when something needs quick attention. The most important part of my job is making sure both clients and staff feel supported, because when the team is steady, clients get the consistency they need. I work closely with the leadership team, sharing updates, talking through solutions, and making sure we are all heading in the same direction.

Q: What does being a Servant Leader mean to you?

Terence:

For me, being a servant leader means putting the needs of clients and co-workers first. It is about stepping into their shoes, listening, and showing respect and empathy in every situation. It is not about titles, it is about being willing to do the work right alongside the team, leading by example, and making sure everyone has the tools and support they need to succeed.

Q: How do you take care of yourself?

Terence:

I keep it simple by spending time with family and wearing another hat by hosting events like birthday parties. I have learned that if I am not taking care of myself, I cannot show up 100 percent for my clients or my team. I make it a point to find small ways to recharge, even on busy days.

Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

Terence:

Big football guy here, and yes, it is all about the Philadelphia Eagles for me!

Q: Is there something we aren’t asking that you’d like to share or think would be helpful for us to know about your role or Help in the Home in general?

Terence:

I think what makes Help in the Home different is how much we genuinely care about the people we serve. It is not just a job here, there is a real commitment to meeting clients where they are, and that is why I am proud to be part of this team.
